Radon Mitigation Systems
The number one thing to keep in mind when it comes to radon mitigation is that it can release a radon gas, which is a carcinogen that puts you and your family at risk of lung disease if it’s inside your home. If you have had radon testing performed in your home and have found that radon is present, it’s critical to get started with radon mitigation right away. There are a few different methods that are commonly used for radon mitigation. Learn a little more about them so that you’ll know how our radon mitigation team can help reduce the levels of radon in your home.
Active Suction Systems
Radon gas has a tends to accumulate under the concrete flooring of your basement and then once a crack has formed in the flooring it releases the gas. If your basement or crawlspace has concrete instead of a dirt flooring, then a more active suction system will be required to remove the radon gas. An active suction system will use a specialized fan that vents the gas out from under your flooring and out of your home. Afterward, our Fresh Air professional will seal the remaining cracks in your flooring to prevent more radon leaks.
Passive Suction Systems
A passive suction system, as opposed to an active one, is generally best suited for homes that are still in the planning phases or under construction, but it is built into homes in order to prevent radon gas from building up. It varies in the levels of pressure it uses in various rooms to create an airflow that continuously moves throughout the home and into other areas. The passive systems are good for keeping the radon levels low, however, they are not good at removing high levels of radon gas that may already be present within your home.
Sub-membrane
Sub-membrane mitigation systems are best installed in homes that have crawlspaces that are occupied by loose flooring such as dirt. This process begins with the installation of a plastic sheet or tarp over the flooring or dirt of your crawlspace. From there a channel is created underneath with a fan, a pipe, or both. Harmful radon gasses are then removed from your home through this channel. As it is common for radon gas to accumulate in low areas of a home, this can be a useful method of radon mitigation, and it can be cost-effective, but depending on situation, it won’t work for all.
