What is radon?

  • Radon is a colorless, odorless gas produced by the radioactive decay of radium-226, which is found in granite, gneiss, and shales.
  • These type of rocks are commonly found in areas that underlie the Charlotte metro area.
  • Because of the close proximity to the rocks, soil and ground water can also be affected.
  • Building materials that use this rock type, such as aggregate used in concrete, can produce high levels of radon inside of buildings.
  • A few buildings in uptown Charlotte have elevated levels because of use of this type of aggregate.
  • Radon is measured in picocuries per liter of air (pCi/l)
  • Radon is found in high levels homes in every state.
  • Radon levels can differ greatly from area to area, even home to home.
  • Radon enters buildings and homes through cracks in foundations and basement floors, conduit penertations and other building weakness.
  • Radon tends to accumulate in the lower portions, basements and crawl spaces.

Why is it an issue?

  • Long term exposure to Radon Gas is the number one cause of lung cancer among people who don’t smoke. If you smoke and your home has high levels of radon, your chance of lung cancer doubles.
  • The normal indoor rate Normal indoor levels are 1.3 pCi/l.
  • The US Surgeon General recommends fixing homes with radon levels at or above 4 pCi/L.
  • The EPA recommends that people should consider mitigating radon levels between 2 pCi/L and 4 pCi/L.
  • The EPA recommends purchasers of real estate are advised to delay or decline a purchase if the seller has not successfully abated radon to 4 pCi/L or less.

How do I know if I have radon?

We recommend using a third party testing company to accurately test for the presence of Radon. We are a full service radon mitigation company, but testing and doing the mitigation work we feel is a conflict of interest. We work the area’s best radon testing professionals and we would be happy to recommend someone for you.

I have radon in my home…What do I do now?

The good news is that radon levels can be reduced easily and cost effectively. Fresh Air Technologies is a full service radon service specializing in the installation of:

  • Sub Slab Depressurization System (SSD) – used with homes with basements
  • Sub Membrane Depressurization Systems (SMD) – used with homes with crawl spaces
  • Energy Recovery Ventilator Installation (ERV) – used when the above methods are not feasible
  • Radon Reduction in New Construction (RRNC) – Controls radon and water

Part of the mitigation cost can depend upon what is required to conceal the system and maintain the aesthetic value of the home. For example, a retrofit system routed outside the house can reduce radon quite well, but it may not be as visually pleasing as one routed through an interior closet. We specialize in concealment and making them aesthetically pleasing.
